Newman was an apprentice at Ashton Gate, making his debut in February 1982 in the wake of the financial turmoil which saw eight senior players tear up their long, lucrative contracts.
He went on to make 482 appearances for the club in nine years, even taking on the captain's armband.
Newman was part of the side that reached the Football League Trophy final at Wembley in consecutive seasons, winning 3-0 against Bolton Wanderers in 1986 and losing to Mansfield Town on penalties a year later.
In 1990 Newman was in the side that won automatic promotion from Division Two.
Just 12 months later he was sold to Norwich City for £600,000, going on to play in the Premier League and UEFA Cup.
Newman spent time in management with Southend United and Cambridge United, and is now a scout for Manchester City in Spain.
