London-born Stanton came through the Stevenage youth system and whilst playing he studied and graduated from University of Hertfordshire with a first-class degree in sport and performance analysis.

Also a UEFA-qualified coach, he joined the backroom staff at Barnet FC in League Two, before going on to join West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

Two years later he joined City and was brought in by Sean O'Driscoll to develop the club's use of analysis. Stanton continued his work under Steve Cotterill and now Lee Johnson.
