Born in Swinton, Greater Manchester, Holden started his career at Bolton Wanderers, before his relationship with Oldham Athletic began following a loan move to Boundary Park in 2001/02.

A successful season led to the move becoming permanent and Holden racked up a total of 125 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals, before joining Peterborough United in 2005.

After two years at London Road, Holden headed north of the border to sign for Falkirk, and later enjoyed spells back in England with Shrewsbury Town, Chesterfield and Rochdale.

He made the last competitive appearance of a 15-year playing career for Walsall, aged 33, in 2014.

The former right-back soon returned to Oldham in a coaching capacity to team up with former City Head Coach Lee Johnson for the first time, but three months later his gaffer was appointed head coach at Barnsley.

Holden stepped in to manage the club for the remaining three months of the campaign, before assisting David Dunn the following season.

After departing Oldham in January 2016 and returning to Walsall, Holden took up the opportunity to move to Ashton Gate in November of the same year, working alongside then assistant John Pemberton.

Since then Jamie McAllister had been appointed alongside Holden as assistant head coaches to Johnson in the first team coaching setup. Johnson was relieved of his head coach duties on July 4th 2020 and Holden was appointed caretaker manager of the club.
