Wandsworth-born Coles spent the majority of his professional career with Aldershot – through two separate spells – and down the road in Somerset at Yeovil Town.

Coles has been a goalkeeping coach for Southampton, where they reach the FA Cup final in 2003, before switching to their South Coast rivals Portsmouth after eight seasons.

In 2010 he moved on to West Ham United for a year, before taking up a position at Al Jazira in Abu Dhabi.

Coles rejoined Portsmouth in 2013 but took up his position at Ashton Gate following Lee Kendall's departure to the FA in 2014.
