You want to play with spirit – Johnson

Lee Johnson was pleased with how his players responded during last night’s pre-season test against Forest Green Rovers.

The League Two outfit found themselves two goals to the good, courtesy of a Shawn McCoulsky brace, but Josh Brownhill halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time.

Rovers regained their two-goal cushion early into the second half through Aaron Collins, but goals from Andi Weimann, Sammie Szmodics and Adam Webster saw the Robins secure a 4-3 win.

“It was difficult for us,” said Johnson. “I think we started a little grumpy in terms of our attitude, which is maybe why we weren’t as sharp as we should have been.

“We had a lot of possession but not enough opportunities at the back end of it and I think we over complicated it a little bit, sometimes simplicity is genius.

“We were much better in the second half, we conceded a goal at a bad time but we threw caution to the wind as if it were a league game.

“I put Saikou [Janneh] on and I thought he gave us some natural enthusiasm. He ran around, put people under pressure, rallied the crowd and I love him from that.

“You want players who play with spirit and the last 20 minutes the spirit was obviously very good.”

City complete their pre-season calendar on Saturday (July 27th, 3pm KO) when Premier League side Crystal Palace visit Ashton Gate.
