Wimbledon test ideal says Johnson

Lee Johnson believes Wimbledon was just the test City needed as they head across the Atlantic for their pre-season training camp.

City beat the Dons 3-2 at the Cherry Red Records Stadium thanks to Adam Webster’s header and then a double in three minutes from Famara Diédhiou.

Fit and sharp

The Robins were 3-0 up before Wimbledon pulled back two goals – both penalties – and City Head Coach Johnson said: “It was a good workout against a League One side who are on the rise after the new manager came in. You can see the spirit they have and we had to hold on a little bit at the end.

“I thought there were some good performances and it was good to get some minutes into the legs.

“Naturally there are things to improve and work on but as a general rule the lads look fit and sharp, we moved the ball quite well at certain times. They were well organised and difficult to break down.”

Young players

“I was pleased with the contribution of the younger players and you can see their year-on-year progression and development. It’s good in pre-season when you have a clean slate and you can see the physicality, the tactical understanding and awareness improve.

"Naturally that will start to fine tune itself as pre-season goes on but it’s another win, against a League One side, and good to breed confidence.

Penalties

“It’s a bit of a worry to concede four penalties in two games but better to get them out of the way rather than slap bang in the middle of the season!"

Heading to the States

City head to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida on Wednesday and will face Derby County on Saturday, July 13th (6pm KO EDT, 11pm BST)  - live on BCTV - and Sarasota Metropolis on Friday, July 19th (11am KO EDT/ 4pm BST).

Johnson added: “I’m looking forward to having the players together at close quarters, getting the new players integrated and understanding what makes them tick, see if we can forge a few partnerships out there and looking forward to what should be great trip.

"The facilities are good from what I have seen, two good games and an extended period to be able to bed in some serious work.”
