Williams thrilled with ‘big performance’

Ashley Williams was thoroughly delighted to come away from Cardiff City Stadium with a clean sheet and three points on Sunday, as City moved up the table and enter the international break in high spirits.

Welsh international Williams was a rock at the back, playing a pivotal role as City kept Cardiff at bay, while Josh Brownhill’s second-half strike proved enough to win the game 1-0.

The result secured City their first win on Cardiff soil for 17 years and inflict the Bluebirds' first home loss of the season.

The Severnside derby on Sunday lunchtime was also chance for City to bounce back after letting slip a 2-0 lead to Barnsley a week earlier.

“As you say, it’s a happy dressing room, it was a difficult game, not pretty at times but off the back of the last two games that was a really big performance from us,” Williams said.

“It’s always important to go into the international break on a high, to try the next block of games with a win. We’ve looked after this end and after the disappointment of conceding late against Barnsley it was a really long week.

“We had to do a lot of talking and work on the field and you can see what the manager implemented within the week worked. In the second half they had eight or so players up front.

“They are a big team but we still shut them out and you could see the lads out on their legs at the end. That’s the work rate, effort and application that you need in this league to get a clean sheet.”

Enjoy that, Ash?

Williams – a familiar face in South Wales from his Swansea playing days - also explained his celebrations at the full-time whistle. He was among the first of the City squad to face the travelling supporters, expressing sheer delight with the result.

“Yes [it meant a lot] for obvious reasons,” he said. “I got a bit of stick as I expected, it’s always the same and that’s the beauty of football. There was nothing nasty, just booing and jeering so when you win you celebrate it, that’s the same the other way around so it was a nice game for me, personally.

“But it’s more than that, It’s a clean sheet away from home and a good performance.”

He added: “I thought they (City supporters) were brilliant the whole time, they made themselves known. They enjoyed the goal, the celebrations at the end so we’re happy they can go over the bridge with three points and they are happy.”

The Robins will be back in action at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, November 23rd (3pm KO).
