‘Why it’s important we finish well’ – Holden

Dean Holden wants to see one final “massive effort” from the players as they bring the season to a close at home to Preston North End.

The interim head coach, who has overseen City’s last four matches, has told the players of the importance of fighting for the final three points of the season, and while neither the Robins or Preston can finish the campaign in the play-offs, Holden wants to bring smiles back to the supporters before the delayed summer break.

“We want to see a continuation of recent performances, we want to finish with a win and  that’s huge for everybody connected to the club,” Holden explained. “It’s been a weird time, a long season with Covid-19 in the middle of it, and a lot to deal with as a football club.

“The players and staff have pulled together, they’ve been brilliant, so we want to finish with a fantastic effort and hopefully put smiles back on the faces of our supporters ahead of what is a quick turnaround, ready for a fresh attack at promotion next season.

“Certainly since Lee (Johnson) left the football club, through adversity you have to pull together. The players, the staff and the supporters have pulled together and that’s huge.”

The supporters are at the forefront of the players’ minds and there is sympathy with everyone who has not been able to attend matches due to the health and safety concerns surround the Covid-19 virus.

Holden continued: “I’ve told the players: ‘don’t underestimate the importance of pulling on the Bristol City shirt and what that means to thousands of people.’

“It’s been a strange season for the supporters. We can’t imagine what they’ve been through during Covid-19 and not being allowed to turn up at football stadiums but they’ve supported us from afar and we’ve felt that.”

And Holden shared his thoughts on the upcoming game with the Lilywhites, who held City to a 3-3 draw at Deepdale back in September.

He added: “It’s all about one massive effort tomorrow. We can’t underestimate the opposition; we know Preston are a tough team. Alex (Neil) is someone I have huge respect for, I was on the Pro-Licence with him a few years ago so I’m looking forward to seeing him before the game, but it’s about focussing on our performance, getting that right and hopefully that will lead to three points.”
