Wells targets positive run of form

Nahki Wells says City have “regrouped” and are aiming for a good run of form as they look to build momentum and challenge for the play-off positions.

Dean Holden’s men are eighth in the Sky Bet Championship, just three points behind sixth-placed AFC Bournemouth heading into tomorrow’s trip to Derby County (January 30th, 3pm KO).

The Robins have won their last two games - progressing to the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round in the process – and look to secure another three points off the back of a hard-fought 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town.

Wells told Robins TV: “We’re all in a good place at the moment and we’re very excited. Confidence is growing and we’re all looking forward to the match on Saturday.”

Despite victory over The Terriers in midweek, there were lessons to be learned after the visitors put City under a great deal of pressure in the second half. They were on the backfoot despite having led 2-0 inside 26 minutes, and while the visitors hit the woodwork four times, the Robins held on to take all three points.

Famara Diédhiou scored a brace against the Terriers

Wells said: “The gaffer reiterated it’s important we buckle down and put a run together. It was disappointing to lose at Norwich, a big game for us but they were a better side on the night. We regrouped, got an important, comfortable win against Millwall and took that momentum into the league fixture against Huddersfield.

“We’ve got to not just have a good 30 minutes. But it was an important 30 minutes [against Huddersfield] because we got the two goals and then we dealt with their pressure for the rest of the game. We knew what they would bring, we knew what to expect but it’s important we try to dominate, get better on the ball, create more from start to finish and if we do that, we know we are capable of getting the three points.”

Training ahead of the trip to Pride Park has come from the new pitches at Failand, which Wells described as “fantastic. We’ve waited for these opportunities out here and I really enjoyed it.” The pitches form part of the new multi-million pound, state-of-the-art training complex which will bring the first team and Academy together under one-roof.

Wells also heads to Derby with six goals to his name so far this season, which falls short of his own expectations. He’s his own worst critic but the striker believes the team to be on the right path as he hopes to rediscover his goalscoring form.

“It’s been different, but it’s been good,” he said, discussing his form. “I had a good run with Chris Martin at the beginning of the season then I fell out to the wing more. Maybe I wasn’t first choice for a period, but I knew I wasn’t comfortable in that role forever, but we had a depleted squad and we picked up some big results with me there.

“Now we have a bigger squad with players coming back so I’m looking forward to playing more central for the rest of the season.

“I’m disappointed with the goals I have. I’m no hypocrite and I’m honest but the team feels we’ve underachieved in that aspect. Maybe not Famara who is in form (six goals from seven games) and scoring every game. I’m not one to shy away from reality, I should have more goals but I’m still confident and sure with the players in the squad that they can help me produce goals. I’m sure the goal tally will increase very shortly!

“We’d like to be in a better position. We all know the demands and what we need to do this season. But considering what we’ve overcome, a lot of clubs in our position would be worse off. We’re three points off the play-offs, we have some winnable fixtures coming up at an important time so let’s try and put a run together to push momentum towards those positions.”
