'We weren’t at the right level today' - Holden

Dean Holden says Bristol City need to rediscover their recent good form after watching his side lose 1-0 in a disappointing affair at Pride Park.

Derby County raced into a fourth-minute lead when Colin Kazim-Richards met Lee Buchanan’s sweeping cross, before they were denied a second when Kamil Jozwiak struck the post.

City mounted a spell of pressure towards the end of the first half but, that aside, struggled to break through Wayne Rooney’s side in the second half.

The result sees City ninth in the Sky Bet Championship table - just three points off the top six.

Holden expressed his disappointment and admitted his side to improve their performance levels.

He told Robins TV: “I’m hugely disappointed with the performance. They have been good of late but we just didn’t get ourselves going and we conceded an early goal.

"We didn’t get ourselves going in the whole game and we were nowhere near where we expect.”

Going into more detail, he continued: “Every game is different and Derby played well today. They played the conditions better than we did on a poor pitch. We didn’t give ourselves a chance to mount pressure to get something from the game.

“We lost Rowey (injury) early doors which wasn’t ideal and we had to adapt to that. We hope Krystian Bielik (injured in the first half) is okay, he didn’t sound good when he got injured so our wishes are with him.

“But it’s been a bad afternoon for us and it wasn’t anywhere near the level we have set or expect and we have to respond on Wednesday.”

Holden added he thought substitute Owura Edwards was a “livewire” when he came on for a 10-minute spell but overall stressed the team “performance level wasn’t good enough.”

Wednesday presents City with an away trip to Brentford, who themselves are challenging for promotion.

Holden said: “We have to respond and we’ve done that time and time again this season. We don’t want these performance or results but we have to respond in the right manner.

“We have to get ourselves going now for a huge test on Wednesday and we have to get our performance levels back up to where they have been in the last couple of games.”

Brentford versus City kicks off at 7.45pm this Wednesday.

This match will not be available on Robins TV due to EFL regulations.
