Dean Holden reflected on an “important win” to put City back on track with a 2-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers.
Famara Diédhiou’s 87th-minute strike into the roof of the net – his third winner off the bench this season – saw the Robins end the day three points off the play-offs.
Chris Martin had nodded City into a deserved half-time lead with his third goal of the season in all competitions, before Wycombe fought back through a deflected shot from Garath McCleary.
Holden told Robins TV: “It was vital that we got the three points today – it was important that we got back on track. I thought the first-half display was very good, we passed the ball and created big chances having scored a very good goal with Callum’s ball to the far post for Chris Martin. When you don’t take your chances you are always open and they scored from a deflection.
“In the second half we got a little bit anxious in our play and we stopped passing it like we did in the first half. That may be a bit natural with the run that we have been on but I am pleased we kept going like we did.”
“It’s the third time that Fam has come off the bench and done that this season and the build up to the goal was very good link play, good combination play around the edge of the box and a great finish from Famara.
“It’s vitally important for the squad that everybody sticks together and does their job when they come on the pitch. Although he got sent off against Millwall he hasn’t trained really since then – he had a little groin problem and we thought we might get 20 or 30 minutes out of him today.”
“Wycombe are not an easy team to play against. Forget where they are in the league, in this division anything can be thrown at you and (Adebayo) Akinfenwa is as difficult as they come for the way he plays and I thought we handled him really well. It was important that we didn’t get in all the battles with him. We had to be smart and I thought Tomas, Zak Vyner and Mapps (Adrian Mariappa), when he came on, did that.
"Hunty’s got a real nasty gash. Zak’s got a back spasm and Callum is feeling his hamstring so we’ll have to see where we are in the next couple of days.
City now head to Luton Town (December 29th, 7.45pm KO), live on Robins TV, with Holden saying: “We’ve got a quick turnaround for the next one at Luton and we go there in good spirits after a really important win.”
