'We need to build on our performance' - Rafferty

Bristol City Women’s Laura Rafferty is hoping her side can build on their draw against Tottenham Hotspur as the Robins prepare to face Lewes LFC in the FA Continental Cup.

The Northern-Ireland international featured in City’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Spurs in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League as the Robins won their first point of the season, and the defender believes her side’s strong performance can give them momentum going into the Continental Cup tie on Wednesday night.

“We believed from start to finish we were going to get something out of the game,” said Rafferty.

“It was important for us to stay in the game and I think we did that well. Going behind 2-1, it’s easy to break, but I think we showed true character, stuck with each other and we got our reward, it paid off.

“Lewes are a very good team. We’ve studied them, we’ve worked hard on the training pitch for it, it’s definitely not a place where we’re going to go and be complacent.

“We’re going into it on the back of a great result and we need to build on that. We’re going to go in the same way we do for every single match, we’re going to work hard for each other, the effort is going to be there and hopefully we come out with a result.”

City will travel to The Dripping Pan stadium on Wednesday evening for their last match in the Continental Cup group stages where they will face up to Lewes FC.

Lewes are currently sitting mid-table in the FA Women’s Championship, however they are yet to register a victory in the Continental Cup as they sit bottom of Group F.

A point for Bristol City will guarantee them top spot in the group and send them into the next round of the competition, a prospect which motivates Rafferty and the rest of the team.

“We’ve obviously worked hard every day as a group on and off the pitch. I think we’ve had some previous results that haven’t gone our way, but we’re building on something from Saturday and it’s definitely taken the momentum forward for us, and obviously topping the group will give us something massively to look forward to.

“We’ve been working on, getting on the ball and moving the ball quickly, just because we will have the majority of the ball doesn’t mean we will be moving it slowly. We need to break the lines, we need to move forward and it is going to be different from some of our previous WSL games where we are defending a lot more.

“We need to not be complacent; we will see how the game goes, we will get a feel for the game in the first five minutes and we will take it from there. We’ve got our game plan, we’ll go with it and we will put a performance in like we always try to and hopefully get the result.”
