We must be world class at the basics - Johnson

Lee Johnson says City need to be world class at the basics to compete at the top end of the Sky Bet Championship.

The head coach was reflecting on the 2-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers at Ashton Gate which saw Bradley Johnson score in the second minute to put the Robins on the back foot.

Basics
“You’ve got to be world class at the basics in this league, it’s as simple as that,” said Johnson. “We didn’t do the simple things well today and that set the tone for the game.”

Aggressive
“You have to win tackles. The first thing is to compete. There were too many and in my mind’s eye I can remember eight or nine tackles where we weren’t fully committed in midfield areas. We have some technically good players but we have to learn to mix it at this level. That’s given me food for thought.”

Chances
City created opportunities and Johnson added: “It’s key at this level you have to take your chances. I thought we had a good patch after the first goal we conceded. We created three really good opportunities and you’ve got to score at this level.

“That changes the game, they were strong, very edgy in terms of the way they wasted time and games-manship but they’ve come out with the result. We have to take it on the chin, go back to basics and be more aggressive in our simplicity.”

First goal
“Yes it was very difficult, we caused ourselves problems. It was a player who blocked Pedro Pereira, who was man marking. Don’t get blocked, it’s as simple as that.”

Second goal
“The second goal kills us. We huffed and puffed in the second half, didn’t do enough, didn’t have enough box entries. Famara’s missed by a millimetre, he hasn’t tucked it in from a good move and that summed up our day in my opinion, powder puff.”
