‘We must be fully focused’ - Dykes

Loren Dykes believes Bristol City Women must put Sunday’s cup defeat behind them and focus their energy on putting in a strong performance against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Tanya Oxtoby’s side travel to Kingsmeadow to face Emma Hayes’ Chelsea having previously held them to a goalless draw in the West Country back in September, but captain Loren Dykes is wary of the challenge her side face against a confident Chelsea.

“We’ve played against Chelsea before, so we know what to expect. They’re a top team that possess a lot of threats but we know that if everyone performs on the night and we execute our game plan then there is no reason why we can’t come away with a result,” said Dykes.

“We’ve all got to be on the same page heading into tomorrow night’s game, they [Chelsea] will be full of confidence after a great result against Arsenal in the FA Cup so we will have to make sure that we’re at our best.

“These are the games where everyone has to their individual job to the best of their ability with a group of players having a stand-out performance, while also having an element of luck on your side, but we know that we have the capabilities within the group to do that.

“So far this season we have proven that we can compete with the top teams in this league with great results against Chelsea, Manchester City and Birmingham. We know we have the ability to get a result, it is now about us executing what we want to do.”

"It was disappointing to lose at the weekend and Durham deserved to go through, but we have got to move on from that now and turn our complete attention to what we can control and that is our performance against Chelsea."

Bristol City Women’s loss to Durham ended a run of eight unbeaten games in all competitions, but heading into Wednesday night’s clash City Women are unbeaten in five Women’s Super League games after victories over Everton Ladies, Birmingham City and Yeovil Town Ladies as well as two draws against Manchester City and Brighton.

“It was disappointing to lose at the weekend and Durham deserved to go through, but we have got to move on from that now and turn our complete attention to what we can control and that is our performance against Chelsea,” said Dykes.

“We can’t be great for every game, there will be blips in our form but it is about how we respond," she continued, "as a group we are firm believers in that if we perform on the pitch and execute our game plan, the result should take care of itself.”
