‘We’ll fight until the last kick of the ball’ – Beard

Matt Beard has promised that his team will ‘give everything’ to keep themselves in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Beard’s side take on Manchester United this Sunday at Twerton Park in what will be the Robins’ final home outing of the current campaign.

With just two games remaining, every point in the league table is vital and the City Women manager believes a good start against United is imperative if they’re to get something from the game.

“I think the biggest thing for me is us having the belief in our own ability. We’ve started too many games conceding early – I think we started really brightly against Aston Villa and we had a sucker punch with the own goal, which rattled us,” said Beard, speaking exclusively to Robins TV.

“I was really pleased with the response in the second half [against Aston Villa] - I want us to take that belief and positivity into the Manchester United game. Yes, it’s going to be a tough game but Manchester United are not going to like coming to Twerton Park and there is a lot at stake for both teams on the day.

“There’s pressure on both teams because they need to keep winning games to try and get that third European spot and we’re fighting for our lives to stay in the division. It’s going to be an intriguing battle and I’m sure the girls will be up for it.”

The City Women boss is proud of the fight shown by his team for getting themselves back in the picture to stay in Barclays FAWSL and has challenged them to finish the job.

“I have said it numerous times, many people wrote us off and we’ve put ourselves in a position that no one probably expected us to be in and we’ll take this fight to the last kick of the ball on May 9th.

“The group have been unbelievable – hands down it’s been the best group I have worked with for togetherness and without a shadow of a doubt we showed that in the second half against Aston Villa.

He continued: “We know the position that we’re in and that we need to get something out of the game. We’re going to do as much as we can to make sure we walk off that pitch with three points on Sunday.”

Beard has praised the group for the work they have put in on the training pitch to change their style of play and hopes it can pay dividends in the final two games of the season.

“The way we have been training is brilliant. We’re starting to see little bits of that now in games, but the games are running out. We’re in a relegation battle.

“The players have been fantastic throughout the three-four months I have been here. The way we have changed the way we’re playing and what we’re doing in the middle of a relegation battle – we’ve put ourselves in a position where we could stay in this division.

“They deserve an enormous amount of credit and I’m looking forward to seeing them play against Manchester United and fingers crossed we can cause an upset.”
