‘We have to go for it’ – Williams

Joe Williams says City are looking forward to testing themselves against Premier League opposition, when they take on Sheffield United in the Emirates FA Cup this Wednesday (February 10th, 7.30pm).

It’s a chance for City to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 1974.

With that in mind and focusing the shift away from the league, midfielder Williams says “we have to believe we can go far” as they get set to take on the Blades at Bramall Lane.

He told Robins TV: “It’s a brilliant competition with loads of tradition, I’ve grown up watching it and I’m looking forward to playing in it.

“We have to take each game at a time but with the cup game there we have to go for it. We have to believe we can go far in it. Each game is competitive and on Wednesday night I’m sure we’ll be looking for a result to go on a cup run for the fans.

“They (Sheffield United) are a top team, they’ve only lost by the odd-goal. They’re in every game and against Chelsea [on Sunday] they competed all night. It’s a massive test for us but for everyone it’s a big test against Premier League opposition.”

City have beaten Portsmouth and Millwall to reach the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, amid a heavy Sky Bet Championship schedule. Form has been indifferent and Williams, who has recently re-joined the squad after long-term injury, knows there is room for improvement.

He says now is the time to put words into action.

Williams added: “We’ve had a few weeks now where we’ve not been as good as we should have so there needs to be a point now where we need to put a stop to it and put words into actions, go out there and do it. There’s no point me standing here saying do this and do that, we have to go out and show it.”

Williams suffered thigh and hamstring injuries in the months since he joined the club meaning he wouldn’t make his Robins debut until Saturday’s Severnside derby.

Williams completed an hour against Cardiff City and he's now looking to get better and better with more football back under his belt.

“It was a long time coming for me after those frustrating few months,” he said. “The result wasn’t what we wanted and it wasn’t how I planned it. Personally, it was my match sharpness, my timings were a bit off, but that will come in the following games. Physically and fitness-wise I’m feeling good. I’m just looking to get that match sharpness back as quick as possible to help the team.”

Wednesday’s match is available on BBC iPlayer for supporters inside the UK only, rather than Robins TV. For those overseas, a channel guide is available here. The match will also be accessible via the red button.
