“We can’t wait to get going” - Oxtoby

Tanya Oxtoby believes her side are ready and raring to go as they kick off their Women’s Super League campaign away to Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend.

Bristol City Women will travel to Crawley Town FC to face Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, (9th September, 2pm) in the opening round of the Women’s Super League season and the Australian insists her side are fully focussed and ready to go. 

Oxtoby’s side will go into the game with confidence having picked up a 2-2 draw away to Leicester and a 3-1 home victory over Sheffield United in the Continental Cup.

“We’ve started well and it’s good to get the first win of the season under our belts early, but the Women’s Super League is a whole different ball game to the Continental Cup and Brighton will be a tough opponent.

“It’s great to see how the group have progressed in such a short space of time and the win against Sheffield United should give them confidence coming into this game.”, she said.

City Women have bought in a lot of exciting, young talent throughout the summer and many of which will be experiencing the Women’s Super League for the first time, but Oxtoby believes they’re ready for the challenge. 

“The level of talent we have within the group is brilliant, they’re improving week-on-week and playing football at this level will only see them progress further and I am so excited to see them develop and harness the potential that they have got.

“We’ve all worked hard throughout pre-season to come together and I believe that the squad as whole are ready for the league to kick off on Sunday.” 

City’s opponents, Brighton and Hove Albion are new to the Women’s Super League this season and the Australian is aware of the threats that Hope Powell’s side will pose on Sunday. 

“Brighton will be a tough test for the squad, they’re new to the league but they have recruited well in the off season, and won’t play with any fear. They have their strengths, but we’ve got to make sure we work hard to nullify those threats as well as execute what we’ve worked hard on in training over the past week, and look to perform to our potential.

“If the performance from the squad is there then I will be happy and I firmly believe that if we execute our process on the day, the result will take care of itself. As a group we can’t wait to get going this Sunday and start our Women’s Super League season.”
