Under-23s beaten by Addicks

City Under-23s fell to a Professional Development League 2 defeat to Charlton Athletic at The Optima Stadium this afternoon.

After a quiet opening period, the visiting Addicks took the lead through Chuks Aneke’s header, before a James Vennings penalty doubled the advantage before the break.

Ben Dempsey added a third for Charlton after the restart, before Vennings scored his second penalty of the afternoon to make it four.

The result saw City remain 8th in the league table.

It was the hosts who started brightly, with Marcus Day picking the ball up on the halfway line, before driving at the Charlton defence, and eventually seeing his powerful effort deflect wide.

The young Robins had another chance to take the lead five minutes later, as Freddie Hinds chested down Ricardo Rees’ clipped through ball, before his strike was smothered by keeper Ben Amos.

Despite the pressure, the City fell behind 25 minutes in, as Josh Davison’s powerful cross was nodded in at the far post by striker Aneke.

The Addicks were then awarded a penalty moments later, as Josh Owers brought down Brendan Wiredu, and Vennings slottrf the resulting spot-kick beyond keeper Wiles-Richards, who dived the right way.

Shortly after the restart, Dempsey added a third for the visitors, curling home from the edge of the area.

The Robins then had the opportunity to find a way back into the game, with Day’s menacing cross reaching Louis Britton at the far post, who was unable to apply the finish.

Charlton were then awarded a second penalty in the 60th minute, with Vince Harper tripping the onrushing Abraham Odoh. Vennings stepped up again, cooly dispatching into the bottom corner.

With City looking to get the goal that their play deserved, substitute Opi Edwards saw his free kick tipped over by Amos with ten minutes remaining, before Britton headed over from the resulting corner.

The Robins face Crystal Palace at the Optima Stadium next Monday (February 3rd).
