U21s pegged back in Leicester

Bristol City Under-21s were beaten 3-1 by a strong Leicester City outfit in their final pre-season friendly.

Joe Morrell fired Wade Elliott’s side in front early on in the East Midlands, only to be pegged back within 60 seconds.

Leicester scored twice more, either side of the half-time interval, to run out victors at their Belvoir Drive training ground.

Under-21 boss Elliott said: “We’re disappointed with the result but not the performance.

“There were lots of pleasing aspects on the day and it’s capped off a good pre-season for us. We’re in good shape for when the season kicks off on Monday.”

Wales youth international Morrell fired home a stunning strike from distance after just seven minutes, but Jacob Blyth restored parity with a guided header immediately from the restart.

Michael Cain’s superb 20th minute free kick had the hosts in front and Blyth scored again soon after half-time to secure victory for the hosts.

City gave a debut to Levi Ives, a summer recruit for the development group from Torquay United. The left wing-back came on as a second-half replacement for Jack Batten.

The new Development League season kicks off for City at Bolton Wanderers on Monday (7pm).

City Under-21s: O’Leary, Vyner, Batten (Ives), Kelly, Harper, Andrews (McNulty), Murphy, Morrell, Fry, Bishop (Dowling), Evans.
