‘Tough, physical and brave’ – Pearson sets expectations for Cardiff

Nigel Pearson will take charge of his first Severnside derby this weekend and he knows exactly what he wants from it when the Robins cross the border for Saturday’s lunchtime test in the Sky Bet Championship (August 28th, 12.30pm).

We’ve fared well in our last two meetings on Cardiff territory, having secured back-to-back 1-0 wins in our previous fixtures at the Cardiff City Stadium.

But results in general have been harder to come by for Pearson’s side so far this season, not that those performances have warranted City’s current position.

However, a result on Saturday would send City into the first international break of the season on a positive note and Pearson has set out what he expects to see from his squad in what is always a highly-anticipated fixture against Mick McCarthy’s Bluebirds.

Pearson told Robins TV: “We know to expect a tough game but he (McCarthy) will know we have our threats too.

“It should be competitive, and you always expect these types of games to be a tough, physical battle. What’s important is that we are still able to play our own way too and we have some good footballers, good technicians. It’s important we don’t try to beat them at their own game, but try and beat them doing our own thing.

“We’ll certainly ask lots of questions physically and in terms of bravery both on the ball and dealing with the physical side.”

Application will be key but Pearson is pleased with how things are coming together as City search for more consistency and record more wins with the season now in full swing.

“We could be in a much better position in terms of points but performances have generally been okay,” Pearson explained. “How the squad is shaping up – and it’s not going to be a quick fix - I’m happy with how the players have applied themselves.

“We could be sitting here with more points for sure, against Swansea our performance was good and we didn’t deserve to lose. Likewise, against Blackpool, we were punished for switching off, so it’s fine margins.

“I’m just looking for us to make sure we fulfil our potential and that is the most important thing. I think we are performing much better and more consistently which is very important.”

He added: “What we do need to do is start to get more wins and what a great place to go and try and do that [at Cardiff]. We need to deliver for the fans as we did against Reading. Every game is different in terms of the opponent, but we need consistency of performances and have that internal drive to produce - it’s as simple as that.”

Midfielders Callum O'Dowda and Joe Williams will not be part of the travelling squad.

City will be backed by a 2,400-strong away end with tickets now sold out. Fans without a ticket can stream the game via Robins TV, which is available to both domestic and overseas supporters due to its earlier kick-off time.

Robins TV coverage starts with the pre-match build-up at 12pm, followed by live video with commentary, analysis and replays.
