Toe Problem Concerns O'Neil

Gary O’Neil represents the only concern for head coach Lee Johnson ahead of Saturday’s visit to Huddersfield Town (3pm).

The experienced midfielder has been troubled by a toenail complaint, which has prevented him from training this week.

Johnson is hoping the issue will be fixed in time to allow O’Neil to join the squad at the John Smith’s Stadium this weekend.

“His big toenail is an issue, it’s really sore,” Johnson said at his weekly press conference, available now on Bristol City Player HD.

“I know it sounds petty but I know from my time as a footballer, it can be a real disaster for your running style if you have toe issues.

“If someone treads on your toe and it starts bleeding under the nail, it can cause real problems.

“He’s had the toe drained and we hope he’ll be back in training [on Friday].”

Johnson added that Joel Ekstrand appears to have made a “miraculous” recovery after having fluid drained from his knee recently.

Ekstrand was among a strong City side that played in a behind-closed-door game against Cheltenham Town at Failand this week.

Ivan Lucic, Taylor Moore, Joe Bryan, Josh Brownhill, Bobby Reid, Callum O’Dowda, Jamie Paterson, Gustav Engvall and Diego De Girolamo joined Ekstrand and a trialist in the game, which City won 5-2.

Elsewhere, Johnson praised Adam Matthews’ display in the recent 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Ashton Gate, which ended a three-game losing run in the Sky Bet Championship.
