Steve Cotterill hopes sealing Bristol City’s place in next season’s Sky Bet Championship is just the start of something special at Ashton Gate.
The League One leaders sealed promotion with a remarkable 6-0 victory at play-off hopefuls Bradford City, who were FA Cup quarter-finalists this season.
But the City boss is already setting his sights on the future, starting with the prospect of the League One title this weekend.
“Hopefully it’s the start of something big for Bristol City,” said Cotterill.
“Our supporters have been magnificent at home and away this season. I can’t speak highly enough of them – to have as many as we had here tonight on a Tuesday at Bradford from Bristol.
“It’s not like it’s just up the M5 and up the M6. The amount of motorways you have to go across to get here is unbelievable!
“We’re going to go to some good clubs and if we can replicate our football a level up, that will be great.”
Goals from James Tavernier (two), Joe Bryan, Luke Ayling, Aden Flint and Aaron Wilbraham completed City’s biggest win of an already historic campaign, with the title and 101 points still to play for.
“We’ve ended up playing 55 games tonight and Bradford 54 – that’s 109 games between the two teams out there tonight and both teams were still giving it their all,” he continued.
“The way their supporters backed them, even at six down, was fantastic and good luck to them for the rest of the season.
“We’re talking about a team that have beaten MK Dons, Sunderland and Chelsea. I think the magnitude of the result has knocked everyone for six.
“We’re really pleased, but what we want is the title. Saturday will be a fantastic occasion at Ashton Gate.”
Season Tickets for the 2022/23 campaign are selling at a record pace, with more than 9,000 supporters already committed.
