'This is a club heading in the right direction’ - Williams

Joe Williams says the ambition and drive of promotion he shares with the club was an influential factor in his decision to join.

He became Dean Holden’s first signing after putting pen to paper on a four-year deal, completing his switch from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

Williams, 23, describes himself as an all-round midfielder, a leader who enjoys playing in a holding role or box-to-box.

And having joined from Wigan and featured for Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers in recent seasons, he is familiar with the Championship and his new club. He links up with some familiar faces too, including Kasey Palmer after the pair played together for England Under-20s. Williams and Liam Walsh also developed through the Everton Academy and have been friends since they were children.

“I’m buzzing to get going,” Williams said. “I walked into the training ground, you could see the new one being built next to it and I’ve heard so many positive things. It’s where the club is heading, in the right direction, and I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve been to Ashton Gate a few times, it’s always a tough place to play but it’s a lovely stadium and I’m looking forward to getting going.

Joe Williams speaks to Robins TV about his move

“Speaking with the manager (Holden) and a few of the lads here I know the club is heading in the right direction. There’s only one place it wants to be and that’s the Premier League. When you look at a team and a club you want to share that same ambition, so I’m delighted to be here and hopefully we can give it a good go next season.”

He added: “I’ve seen this squad on paper and having played against them before I know there’s more than enough in our team to push for promotion. We’ll give it everything we’ve got.”
