'Things to be proud of and areas to improve' - Johnson

Lee Johnson saw his side dominate yet ultimately end up in defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Pilgrims scored the only goal of the game at Ashton Gate through a first-half header from Yann Songo'o.

A much-changed City side threw everything at the visitors - 22 shots in all with 63 per cent possession - but they could not force an equaliser.

Korey Smith did put the ball in the back of the net but saw any celebrations cut short when the flag was raised for offside.

The result means City are out of the cup competition for another year.

"You have to go credit to Plymouth who defended very well. We had 22 shots but they put their bodies on the line and defended well," the City head coach told bcfc.co.uk.

"We bossed the game from start to finish but that doesn’t matter. If you don’t win it in the boxes, and we didn’t tonight, then the good chance is you won’t win the game.

"We did have some good chances which we felt we should have scored from but there are things I was pleased with and things I was very disappointed about."

Johnson said his new-look team still have things to build on as the season continues.

"We’re a new team, we have to hit the ground running because we have a few key, important players," he added.

"It’s an adaption period and fans have seen all the good and bad things about this new team.

"We need to make sure we make our strengths super strengths and bump out our bad bits to make them better."

City return to Ashton Gate when they host Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday (August 18th, 3pm).
