Chris Martin says the squad can be happy with how their pre-season is progressing.
The group are into day two of their training camp at Loughborough University, their third week of pre-season after a first competitive 90 minutes against Celtic.
The striker, who led the team out against the Hoops on Wednesday with 60 minutes under his belt, says the players have “dealt with the rigours of pre-season really well.”
Speaking to Robins TV from a very hot Loughborough University, a vested-Martin said: “You can see everyone’s got their arms out today, it’s a really warm day but it’s what pre-season is all about: getting the work in physically and having time to bond with each other before the season starts.
“I’m sure it will be very intense we’ve been warned about the afternoon session being around 30c so we’ll be put through our paces but it’s what we expect.
“We’ve dealt with the rigours of pre-season really well so far, we’re happy with the fitness levels, the application and I’m sure that will continue.”
Martin is back around the squad after an injury-hit 2020/21 campaign, which ruled him out of action from January.
But he has re-joined the group for pre-season training as Nigel Pearson prepares his team for the new campaign.
“I’m delighted be back around after not playing for a long, long time. There’s been a lot of hard work to get back into my condition and I’m in a good space,” he said.
“The extra perk was the captain’s armband and it was greatly received and an honour to put it on for the first time to lead the lads against Celtic. That was a tough test, they’re slightly ahead of us in terms of the time they came back in for pre-season, they have UEFA Champions League qualifiers too, so we expected that but it’s what we needed at this stage.”
City will return to the Robins High Performance Centre on Monday, before their second pre-season fixture against Portsmouth on Tuesday (July 20th, 2pm KO). The match will be streamed live on Robins TV.
