The debrief: Wigan Athletic (A)

Head coach Lee Johnson reflects on City's 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

Below is a summary of what he had to say in the post-match press conference.

  • Lee Johnson gave Paul Cook’s team credit, admitting: “Fair play to Wigan, they worked their socks off.”
  • The head coach said he “didn’t see it coming and there was no excuse for it." He didn’t think his side showed "anywhere near the character" they usually do
  • He added that City didn’t play with enough “grit and steel"
  • On Joe Garner’s yellow card for the foul on Adam Webster, Johnson reflected: “I have played against him as a player and as a coach a number of times. He is that sort of player you want in your team but sometimes it goes over the edge. Whether that went over the edge today I’ll let you (the media) decide.”
  • With Aston Villa arriving at Ashton Gate in seven days’ time (Friday, September  28th), Johnson added: “We’ve got to have a good look at ourselves and find a way to bounce back.”
