The Debrief: Lee Johnson post-Derby County away

Lee Johnson reflects on City's 1-1 draw away to Derby County.

He spoke to the media at Pride Park about an open game, the number of chances and why Nathan Baker was substituted at half-time.

Lee Johnson:

  • The City Head Coach described the fixture as “a good game…a game of chances for both teams” with both sides displaying well their respective way of playing.
  • He explained how he shifted Jamie Paterson into the number ten role, to give City a platform to press and make it a more even game.
  • Johnson reflected on the chances City had, notably Paterson’s misjudged volley, Famara Diédhiou’s overhead kick which was well saved by Scott Carson, as well as his earlier shot which hit the bar.
  • Johnson praised both goalkeepers for making good saves, with Niki Mäenpää also in top form to keep the scores level.
  • He was pleased with the performance and recognised the five-game unbeaten streak. “Now we need to build momentum going into January,” he said.
  • "Everybody worked hard" he added “but part of me is disappointed we haven't knicked it in the last 15 minutes.”
  • He explained Nathan Baker was substituted at half-time because he had picked up a calf issue.
