The debrief: Hull City (H)

Lee Johnson assesses his side's 1-0 win over Hull City at Ashton Gate.

Here's what he told the post-match media:

  • Hull City are an experienced side and he knew it would be a tough game.
  • Johnson saluted a young team who played “very maturely” with “great heart”.
  • England Under-20 captain Lloyd Kelly was rested to “guard against burnout”.
  • For a “new team” to win back-to-back games like City did with late goals against Brentford and now Hull City will help the players form “a bond and team spirit”.
  • Johnson praised Max O’Leary for his early reflex save and clean sheet on his home league debut, saying: “He was calm and controlled, his distribution was brave and he managed the game well.”
  • He admitted City lacked “a bit of control and care” in the final third of the field.
  • Substitutes Matty Taylor, Callum O’Dowda and Marley Watkins gave the team “a new lease of life” after the hard work of the starting XI.
  • Johnson praised the crowd as well as his players for “sticking in there".
  • Bailey Wright should be back training with the squad in 10-14 to days subject to no recurrence of his thigh injury.
  • Eros Pisano should be back training with the squad next week after his thigh injury.
  • Frank Fielding is still recovering from viral meningitis.
  • Niki Mäenpää will be handling within two weeks following his abductor injury.
