🎥The best of the Severnside Derby

We take a look back at some standout victories over Cardiff City from the past 20 years.

Cardiff City 1-2 Bristol City

Saturday, August 28th 2021
Sky Bet Championship
Goals: Andreas Weimann 21', 70' / Dan Bentley 59' (og)

The opener came as Zak Vyner clipped the ball forward for Weimanm, who initally saw the ball get away from him with his first touch. However, Weimann raced past Flint to bury the ball past Dillon Phillips from a tight angle.

The Bluebirds began to pile on the pressure in the second half and in the 59th minute it paid off when Marlon Pack slipped in Moore, whose deflected shot was cleared off the line by Nathan Baker but bounced back into the net via Bentley’s back.

Antoine Semenyo was introduced after 65 minutes and he looked alert from the off, forcing Phillips into a low stop before assisting City on their way back in front. It was his cross from the right which found Weimann arriving at the far post and the Austrian caught his volley perfectly to restore City’s lead, sending a packed out away end crazy.

Cardiff City 0-1 Bristol City

Sunday, November 10th 2019
Sky Bet Championship
Goal: Josh Brownhill 67'

Josh Brownhill’s stunning strike earned City their first win on Cardiff territory for 17 years.

The on-field captain blasted in a right-footed shot from distance to take the three points back to Bristol.

The Bluebirds would it the woodwork three times at a chilly Cardiff City Stadium but ultimately, they had little response to Brownhill’s second-half moment of brilliance.

Bristol City 2-1 Cardiff City

Saturday, November 4th 2017
Sky Bet Championship
Goals: O'Dowda 20', Flint 66' / Bogle 41'

City secured their first Severnside derby victory for five years by beating ten man Cardiff City 2-1 at Ashton Gate.

Aden Flint's 66th-minute header secured the home win after Omar Bogle was sent off for Neil Warnock's side.

Callum O’Dowda had earlier given Lee Johnson’s side a 20th-minute lead with his first league goal, before Bogle's close-range equaliser just before half-time.

Bristol City 4-2 Cardiff City

Saturday, August 25th 2012
Championship
Goals: Pearson 32', Woolford 45', 70', Baldock 87' / Mason 57', Helguson 82'

Martyn Woolford was the hero of the Severnside derby to send City - temporarily at least - to the top of the npower Championship.

The day will be remembered for Sam Baldock's debut goal after he arrived from the bench, but Woolford's brace either side of half-time was pivotal.

Stephen Pearson had given City the lead on 32 minutes, while half-time substitute Joe Mason pulled one back for Cardiff between Woolford securing a two-goal lead on two occasions.

Heidar Helguson's 82nd minute strike looked set to ensure an edgy finish to a fantastic game, but Baldock - the man on everyone's lips after his unexpected Ashton Gate unveiling in the week - raced clear to wrap up the three points and send City to the league summit.

Bristol City 3-0 Cardiff City

Saturday, January 1st 2011
Championship
Goals: Pitman 3', Johnson 39', Campbell-Ryce 55'

A seventh goal in as many games for Brett Pitman helped City start the new year in perfect style.

The ex-Bournemouth striker took just three minutes to convert Jon Stead's cross from the right, before Stead later set up Lee johnson to double the Robins’ lead in a similar move later on.

The Severnside derby was then wrapped up when Jamal Campbell-Ryce coolly finished the third, while Cardiff came closest when Michael Chopra hit the post.

Cardiff City 1-3 Bristol City

Saturday, December 29th 2001
Division Two
Goals: Kavanagh 47' / Murray 56', 58', Matthews 60'

City struck three times in four second-half minutes to record a fine win at Ninnian Park and go top of the table.

The Buebirds took the lead when captain Graham Kavanagh headed into the net but a brilliant brace from Scott Murray swung the game in City's favour, before Lee Matthews slotted in the third.

This would be City's eighth win from 10 unbeaten league games in Cardiff, whilst stretching their unbeaten Severnbside derby streak to 20 matches.
