Smith reflects on recovery milestone

The road to recovery is a long one but the journey is edging ever closer to its end for Korey Smith.

The midfielder played 70 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday (November 11th), captaining the side in their 2-2 draw with a young Cardiff City squad.

It was Smith’s first competitive action since April and therefore a major milestone in his recovery.

He said: “I’m just buzzing to get out there and play football again. It would have been nice to get the win but we played some really nice stuff.

“We should have scored a few more in the first half but by the second half the pitch was cut up. We have away an early goal and it ended in a draw. On a personal note, I’m happy to be back out there, get the boots back on and play football again.”

The 28-year-old heaped special praise on the City medical staff for their support and work in getting Smith back to fitness.

He continued: “I haven’t made my full comeback yet but obviously a big shoutout goes to the medical staff, it was not only one injury but two major injuries and three or four operations so to get back out there, they have put so much into it.

“I appreciate every single one of them and, while I don’t know what the plan is next, hopefully I can get back out on the first team pitch and repay them.”

By half-time at the Optima Stadium in Weston-super-Mare, Smith told staff he was more than capable of carrying on in the second period, eventually being subbed off 2ith 20 minutes remaining.

He said: “That’s brilliant for me and I didn’t feel too bad, I wasn’t blowing. Credit to the medical staff and sports scientists for making sure my legs are strong, that I’m reasonably fit.

“I’ve played a game so that’s a massive step and I’m proud of myself for that. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, I’ve had a long injury so I won’t say I’m ready to fly.

“The international break has come at a good time for me, I have a few weeks of training then the first team games come back around so we’ll see, whenever the gaffer thinks I’m ready then I can help the first team out.”
