🎥 Smith reflects on City Women's season so far

Lauren Smith reflects on a positive first half of the season for City Women as they sit just six points off of top spot in the FA Championship at the turn of the year.

As City Women aim to start their 2022 with a bang away to Blackburn on Sunday (2pm), Smith sits down with Robins TV to look back at her first six months in charge.

The Robins come into the New Year unbeaten in eight, with their Head Coach keen to replicate their form as they embark on the second half of the campaign.

Speaking to Robins TV, Smith said: "The season started like a bit of a rollercoaster ride, I look at that first game against Crystal Palace when we were in a bit of a situation at half-time and it felt like that carried on for a few of the following games. It was inevitable that that was going to happen as it was a new group."

"We then hit a bit of a rhythm and the group started jelling on the pitch in particular, they grew in confidence and that has shown in our most recent performances."

Smith's side narrowly lost out to Palace 4-3 on the opening day of the season after being 3-1 down at half-time, the Robins then returned to Hayes Lane in December to win 5-4 on penalties in the FA Continental Cup - a result which capped an eight game unbeaten run for the Reds and a turn in fortunes on the pitch.

The Robins' red hot form was kickstarted in the league cup competition back in November as Abi Harrison's 92nd minute winner saw City overcome Barclays FAWSL outfit, Reading in their own back yard.

Looking back to the start of Smith's current journey at City she spoke of the 'exciting challenge' that lay ahead in building a squad and staff from scratch, with only two player signed when she came onboard in June.

A pillar of Smith's project is the player pathway and having homegrown players represent the club, which has been evident to see throughout the first half of the campaign with the likes of Lily Greenslade, Maddi Wilde and Jasmine Bull all making their first team debuts. Not to mention Brooke Aspin, who has been a near ever-present at the heart of the Robins defence.

"I was really excited to get started here as you don't often get to build a team from the start. I spoke to all the players before we signed them to make sure they all had the right ambition and drive, thats something all the players have in common

"Another reason for me taking this job is the fact that I believe in giving young players chances, if they're good enough then they're old enough.

Smith also discussed the upcoming cup fixtures for her City side as they prepare for the fourth round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup and quarter-finals of the FA Continental Cup as well as outing her aims and ambitions for the second half of the campaign.
