Simpson signs one-year deal

Danny Simpson has signed a new one-year deal to stay in BS3.

The defender, who joined the Robins in March, follows Andi Weimann in signing a new contract with a further one-year option.

Simpson told Robins TV: “I could see in those two months what the future could be for Bristol City. I’m pleased that I can be a part of it from the start of pre-season and not towards the end of a season.

“I’m very pleased. I came in at the end of last season for the last couple of months and I enjoyed every minute of it – I got some games, got to know everybody, the area, players, and staff.”

Simpson completed his pre-season testing last week and will join the rest of the squad when they return for training on Monday, June 28th.

And he can’t wait for the Sky Bet Championship season to start again on the weekend of August 7th, saying: "It will feel like a debut again. It’s so important to have fans back – I have heard a lot of good things and we’ve got 12,500 season card holders already. If we can make the stadium a fortress with the fans and the players, it can be a difficult place for teams to come, make away teams know that they’ll have to work really hard and deal with a lot to get something off us.

“We’ve all missed the fans. Every single player and everyone involved in football is delighted that fans are back – for me it will feel like my debut again even though I have played four games. I can’t wait to be there with them and show them what I can do.”

Simpson has won promotion from the Championship on three occasions: with Sunderland and Newcastle and once via the play-offs with QPR as well as a Premier League winners’ medal with Leicester City.

He started his career at Manchester United, where he made three appearances for the Red Devils, before loans at Royal Antwerp in Belgium, as well as Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. In 2010 he joined the Magpies on a permanent transfer followed by a season at QPR.

Simpson signed with the Foxes between 2014-2019 as he fought to keep their top-flight status before the title-winning campaign in 2016. He departed in 2019 and spent a season at Huddersfield Town.
