Simpson joins City for rest of season

City have completed the signing of right-back Danny Simpson until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old arrives in BS3 as a free agent where he is reunited with manager Nigel Pearson.

The pair worked together at Leicester City during the 2014/15 season before the Foxes went on to lift the Premier League title.

Simpson has won promotion from the Championship on three occasions: with Sunderland and Newcastle and once via the play-offs with QPR as well as a Premier League winners’ medal with Leicester.

With 54 clean sheets from 213 top-flight appearances, Simpson becomes Pearson’s first signing since his appointment as Robins manager last month.

Pearson said: “He offers us experience, know-how and, for someone who is in his 30s now, he still has that appetite to play. We have ability in our ranks and a bright future with our young players but it’s about striking the balance with the know-how in game situations.

“I know Danny well, he’s had an excellent career with his exposure in the Premier League so it’s a real positive to make this addition at this point in the season.”

Simpson’s career started at Manchester United, where he made three appearances for the Red Devils. He had loans at Royal Antwerp in Belgium, as well as Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. In 2010 he joined the Magpies on a permanent transfer before a season at QPR.

He joined the Foxes between 2014-2019 as he fought to keep their top-flight status before the title-winning campaign in 2016. He left in 2019 and spent a season at Huddersfield Town.
