Semenyo on life at 40

Antoine Semenyo is keen to add to his 40 appearances this season by helping City get back to winning ways at Birmingham tomorrow (March 13th, KO 3pm).

The 21-year-old has clocked up more games for the Robins this season than in his previous three seasons combined and eight more than the 32 while on loan at Newport County in the 2018-19 season.

And the frontman, who celebrated his first league goal for City against Swansea last month with a backflip, is enjoying life in BS3.

On perfecting his goal celebration to mark his first league goal - also seen away to Millwall in the Emirates FA Cup- he said: “I've done gymnastics when I was at seven or eight, but I wouldn't say I practice! It just comes out of the blue and, yeah, it's a great way to celebrate your first goal.

“It was a weight off my shoulders. That goal was needed so why not a celebration to back it up? One hundred percent it was a relief, I’ve been waiting for that goal for a long time.”

It’s been a roller-coaster 12 months for Semenyo who has experienced his first managerial departures in his young career – Lee Johnson and Dean Holden – and a new head man in Nigel Pearson.

“It's not easy but when you've got the support of all the staff with the players then you take it in your stride and we just have to go again,” said Semenyo.

City have also handed debuts to Academy products Sam Bell, Owura Edwards, Sam Pearson and Ryley Towler as well as first professional contracts to Ayman Benarous, Marlee Francois and Alex Scott and Semenyo is encouraged by the latest cohort, saying: “They are great talents with great potential and they are all working hard and I am buzzing for them.”

Sam Pearson is one of four Academy products to make their Bristol City debut this season

Birmingham City won 1-0 in December thanks to an 80th minute headed corner from captain Harlee Dean and Semenyo added: “It will be a physical game and we need to match that and be resilient. If we can do those things we should get a result. At the start of the game sometimes we can be a bit off it and passive  but if we can add some eagerness early then it will help us with performances.”

Birmingham City versus Bristol City will be streamed live on Robins TV, with the pre-match build-up from 2.30pm, and Rene Gilmartin as guest and commentator.
