Report: Watford Ladies 0-2 Bristol City Women

Bristol City surged back to the top of the FA Women’s Super League 2 standings as first-half goals from Rosella Ayane and Olivia Fergusson handed them a 2-0 victory at Watford.

The Vixens came flying out of the blocks, and found themselves two goals to the good at the interval.

Ayane tested Sophie Cheadle with a shot inside five minutes with the Vixens dominating possession, and just three minutes later the forward smacked in a right-footed volley with Grace McCatty getting the assist.

Charlotte Kerr shot narrowly over the bar in response for Watford, but Bristol looked likelier to double their advantage as Fergusson sent an effort wide and Cheadle stopped Millie Farrow in her tracks.

And it was 2-0 after 30 minutes when Fergusson found herself in the perfect place to tap home Jodie Brett’s corner.

McCatty so nearly made it three before half-time but was inches away from connecting with Ayane's ball across the six-yard box, while Tatiana Pinto had a shot blocked just after the break.

But the Golden Girls steadily edged their way back into the contest, and with 15 minutes remaining Caitlin Leach kept her clean sheet intact, first denying Kim Farrow from distance and then Kerr on the rebound.

The win was the Vixens’ third on the bounce, and their fourth straight clean sheet means they edge clear of Yeovil Town at the top of FA WSL2.

Olivia Fergusson is thrilled that Bristol City have been able to stamp their authority on the table early on in the season as they bid for an immediate return to the top flight.

“That was definitely a great result for us today,” she said. “We’ve had three games in eight days so to get all nine points is really good for us, and keeping another clean sheet is very satisfying too.

“That can be overlooked sometimes when you’re winning games – how important keeping clean sheets can be – because in such a competitive league goal difference can be very important.

“We dominated the game first half and played a lot of it in their territory, and it was hard work out there but we managed to get two goals and from there it was all about keeping the clean sheet.

“Three points is what we came for so we’re really pleased. It’s always good to score a goal on a personal level as well, especially in a close game, so I am pleased to do my bit.

“Watford did come at us a bit more in the second half but it didn’t really affect us in the second half and we didn’t concede.

“We’re back to the top of the table now and that’s where we want to finish the season. We’re in a really positive position where everyone else is having to try and catch us.”
