📝 Report: Hull City 2-2 Bristol City

Matty James’ added-time equaliser secured City a point against Hull City at the MKM Stadium.

James struck on the half-volley for his first City goal as the Robins levelled for a second time to give the 300-strong travelling support something to cheer on their long journey home.

City had conceded in the their third minute before Antoine Semenyo’s second-half leveller and, despite going behind again, in the 79th minute, they battled to secure a share of the spoils.

Background

Nigel Pearson made one change from the team that started against Derby County last Saturday.

Matty James started in place of Tyreeq Bakinson following his 30-minute second-half appearance at Ashton Gate. George Tanner returned to the bench following injury and was called upon after just 30 minutes to replace Alex Scott, who cramped up in both calves.

What happened

City started brightly and had two opportunities inside the first two minutes with Callum O’Dowda driving into the box but the ball bounced off his knee for Nathan Baxter to easily gather and then Semenyo shot over.

Hull made the most of their third-minute counter-attack when Han-Noah Massengo was jostled off the ball and Ryan Longman cut back inside to curl a shot past Bentley despite the City keeper getting a hand on the ball.

City settled into the game and put themselves into good positions but couldn’t execute.

Semenyo went clear in the box but was intercepted as he tried to bring it back on to his left while Martin’s cross was too long for anyone to reach. By then City had lost Scott to injury, replaced by Tanner on the half-hour mark.

City came out firing and Weimann had a half-chance in the 50th minute when James put him through but the Austrian slices his shot wide.

The breakthrough came after 55 minutes when O’Dowda forced a corner and from the resulting set-piece, Semenyo hitsthe post before following up with the rebound with Baxter already committed after the first shot.

City were on the front foot but Hull struck back when Bentley saved superbly from Lewis-Potter and Honeyman was quickest to the loose ball to put the Tigers in front.

Then came the late drama when James stuck from the edge of the box to secure an important point on the road.
