Chloe Kelly’s double on the stroke of half-time saw Everton Women take all three points from their encounter with Oxtoby’s City Women side at Southport FC.
It was a cagey start to Barclays FA Women’s Super league encounter with the first real chance falling to the hosts as Simone Magill won the ball in the City Women box and fired a shot at Baggaley’s goal. Fortunately, the ‘keeper was well placed and got a strong hand to the ball to turn Magill’s effort away.
City Women then have a couple of chances to take the lead through Yana Daniels, the first coming off the back of disruptive work from Wellings but Korpela was out quickly to smother Daniels.
The second came after a pinpoint ball from Harrison freed up the Belgian, but the ball got caught under her feet and she couldn’t get her shot away.
Wellings then saw her glancing header drift agonisingly wide of the far post after a teasing cross from Carla Humphrey into the penalty area.
With the game in the balance heading into half-time Everton took a commanding lead through a quick-fire double from Chloe Kelly.
The wingers’ first came after she dispossessed Sergeant in the City Women half and played a neat one, two with Magill before tucking it in the back of the net off the post.
Kelly’s second came on the stroke of half-time as she picked up a loose ball from twenty-five yards out and fired the ball into the top corner of the net.
Clear cut chances came few and far between in the second half for either team. Wellings testing Korpela with a long range effort while Yana Daniels had a penalty shout turned down for Oxtoby’s side.
Meanwhile, Kelly almost bagged her hat-trick when her curling effort rattled the crossbar before deflecting behind off the back of Baggaley.
City couldn’t find an avenue back into the game and Kelly’s brace proved the difference between the two sides at Southport FC.
