Report: City U23s 4-2 Sheffield United U23s

The young Robins continued their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 4-2 win away to Sheffield United’s Under-23s.

The Blades were also unbeaten from their first two games but were behind in this encounter thanks to what appeared to be a final touch from Louis Britton.

The hosts were quickly level but Britton ensured the visitors to the Technique Stadium would lead 2-1 at the break.

They stretched their advantage in the second half with Saikou Janneh grabbing the pick of the bunch. Will Lankshear made it 4-2 with a volley but City would hold on for the win in this Professional Development League fixture.

WHAT HAPPENED

The opener came after just five minutes when Ayman Benarous’ free kick was volleyed goalwards by Janneh. The ball bounced off the crossbar, bouncing down into the danger area where Britton was on hand to poke the ball over the line.

However, United equalised two minutes later. The goal came from a corner which was looped back towards the far post and the hosts claimed a final touch from Will Lankshear.

It was an end-to-end affair but the post kept City level when Andre Brooks slammed an effort against the woodwork, with Harvey Wiles-Richards saving the follow-up attempt.

But Britton restored City’s lead with the last kick of the half. Benarous played the ball down the line for Sam Bell and his cut back found Britton who swept home to take his tally to two for the afternoon.

Benarous could have added a third goal but dragged a shot wide, however he would assist City’s third instead….and it was rocket of a finish from Janneh! Around ten minutes into the second half he met Benarous’ corner and he lashed his shot into the top corner.

A fourth would arrive in the 74th minute, though it was unclear if it was a Sam Bell goal or an own goal. It came after two saves from young Blades goalkeeper Callum Hiddlestone but he couldn’t keep out the rebound.

The home side would score to halve the scores through Lankshear’s late volley, they even went on to his the post again but the points would soon be settled in City’s favour.

UP NEXT

City have now won each of their first four games and will return to action to face Peterborough United on Tuesday, September 21st (1pm KO).
