Report: Bristol City Women 3-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

City Women won their first league game of the season in emphatic fashion as they defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 3-0 at Twerton Park.

Goals from Yana Daniels and a brace from Ebony Salmon helped City to a well-deserved victory on Saturday afternoon in a resounding victory for Matt Beard’s side.

What happened?

City took the lead early on through a wonder strike from Daniels.

The Belgian shifted the ball out of her feet as she spotted the Brighton ‘keeper off her line, lined up her shot and rifled a thunderous effort from 25-yards-out over Fiskerstrand and off the underside of the bar to open the scoring in spectacular fashion.

Aimee Palmer was inches away from netting a screamer of her own when she let fly from 30-yards, but her drilled effort flew just past the post.

The Robins doubled their lead when Ebony Salmon calmly swept the ball past Fiskerstrand after a swift counterattack from City.

Jas Matthews played a perfectly-weighted through ball to the forward, who used her pace to evade Maya La Tissier and Salmon proceeded to finish past the ‘keeper with composure to double City’s lead.

The Robins started the second half in similar fashion - Matt Beard’s side were fluid in midfield and showed strong defensive resilience in every area of the pitch.

Ebony Salmon was able to add a third for City - her second of the game - from the penalty spot 15 minutes after the restart.

It was unfortunate for Williams, who kicked the ball up onto her outstretched hand, leaving the referee no choice but to award the Robins a penalty. Salmon stepped up and send the ‘keeper the wrong way as she found the top right corner.

City were being rewarded for taking their chances and it seemed the frustration of the scoreline got to Brighton. Kayleigh Green was sent off after a deliberate stamp on Yana Daniels, which saw the visitors reduced to 10 for the remainder of the game.

Salmon was on top-form for City with the forward causing the Albion back line problems all game, and the 19-year-old was denied her hat-trick as she struck the post from an in-swinging corner.

Beard’s side showed great determination to see out the victory and gain a welcome three points in the league for the first time this season.

Teams:

Bristol City Women: Baggaley, Evans, Matthews (C), Pike, Humphrey (Jones, 83), Salmon, Daniels, Wellings (Bissell, 78), Allen, Palmer (Skeels, 76), Purfield.

Substitutes: Haaland, Bryson, Layzell, Mastrantonio.

Key Moment: Yana Daniels

With the game barely underway, Daniels decided to try her luck from distance and catch the keeper off her line, and it worked -  the ball rattled in off the underside of the bar, and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

The goal seemed to shock the visitors and give City a boost of confidence which would see them go on to dominate the game and net a further two goal via Ebony Salmon, whilst also keeping a clean sheet

Pacesetter.

Player of the Match: Ebony Salmon

The striker notched her fourth and fifth Barclays FAWSL goal of the season on Saturday afternoon and will have sent the Brighton backline home having nightmares after a wonderful performance.

Salmon got City’s second and third of the afternoon to seal an emphatic victory for the Robins at Twerton Park. The first as she latched on to a long-ball and fizzed a shot past the outstretched arm of Fiskerstrand, her second came from the penalty spot as she found the top corner from 12 yards.

A constant threat all afternoon for Beard’s side.

Ohhh Ebony Salmon.
