Report: Bristol City Women 0-5 Reading Women

Bristol City Women fell to a 5-0 defeat, at the hands of a ruthless Reading side at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.

Brooke Chaplen had the first chance of the game when the City Women gave away a free kick just outside the box, but City Women goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley managed to collect the ball safely at her near post.

It took Reading just three minutes to find the net, with Fara Williams driving forward from midfield and firing from distance, her shot rifled in off of the underside of the crossbar.

Reading continued to dominate possession early on and it took 13 minutes for the City Women to have their first chance of the game when Danique Kerkdijk’s free-kick was headed inches wide by Chloe Arthur.

Reading continued to create chances and Chaplen’s neat back-heel set up a Jade Moore shot which forced Baggaley into action once again parrying the shot away from goal on the quarter of an hour mark.

Minutes later, Rachel Rowe doubled Reading’s lead with a shot inside the box that Baggaley initially saved but Rowe fired the rebound low into the net..

A great piece of play by Reading saw Williams in on goal and opting to set up Remi Allen for the tap in, increasing Reading’s lead to three after 20 minutes.

The Vixens managed to create a chance when Lauren Hemp found herself in space on the edge of the box, only for Mary Earps to comfortably save her shot on the half hour mark.

Aimee Palmer’s foul on Allen, on 32 minutes, was deemed a penalty by the referee, but Chaplen could only manage to hit the bar from the spot after sending Baggaley the wrong way.

City Women then had a good spell of play when the Reading defence were forced into blocking consecutive shots by Carla Humphrey and Arthur, then Earps saving another Humphrey shot from outside the box in the same passage of play.

On 36 minutes, Hemp was put through on goal only for Earps to produce a great save once again.

The Vixens started the second half promisingly when Hemp showed her pace to get into the box forcing the Reading defence to clear for a corner.

Hemp then capitalised on a mistake by Reading skipper Kirsty Pearce, but her shot was saved by Earps, only for Earps to handle a Pearce back pass giving the City Women an indirect free-kick in the box. However, a breakdown in communication saw the Vixens squander the opportunity.

A reading corner on 67 minutes saw them rattle the bar and a scramble ensued with Rowe eventually finishing off neatly to make the score 4-0.

Reading continued to look a threat every time they advanced, and Rowe got her hat-trick when she rifled a low shot into the far corner on 77 minutes.

Chaplen had the opportunity to increase Reading’s lead on 90 minutes but her shot was deflected wide.

City Women: Baggalay, Matthews (Daniels 72), Kerkdijk, Brown, Dykes, Palmer (Fergusson 71), Arthur, Allen, Humphrey, Turner, Hemp. Subs not used: Leach, E.Wilson.
