City Under-23s produced a late rally but it wasn’t enough as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at home to Colchester United.
The U’s went in at the interval 1-0 up through Republic of Ireland youth international Sam Warde’s goal.
It came against the run of play and moments after Rory Holden’s strike had been chalked out for offside.
Two goals in the space of five minutes early in the second half saw Colchester cruising at a baking SGS College.
However, City weren’t giving up, with Holden and trialist Lucas Sinclair both scoring inside the final seven minutes.
Unfortunately the goals proved no more than a consolation for Luke Williams’ side, who were unable to scramble a late equaliser, despite throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at their visitors.
City Under-23s: Carey, Turner-Williams, Nurse, Llewellyn (Harrison), Harvey Smith (Thomas), Plavotic (Morton), Sinclair, Bakinson, Holden, Richards, Day. Subs not used:, Sainsbury, Ali.
