📝 Report: Bristol City 3-2 Millwall

Andi Weimann’s second City hat-trick inspired the Robins to a 3-2 victory against Millwall at Ashton Gate.

BACKGROUND

Nigel Pearson made two changes to the team that lost to QPR on Thursday, with the injured George Tanner and suspended Andy King making way for Ayman Benarous and Ryley Towler, who returned from his loan at Grimsby last month.

Seven academy products were involved from the start for City.

WHAT HAPPENED

City got off to a flyer yet again in BS3, when Andi Weimann capitalised on a defensive error, lifting the ball over Bartosz Bialkowsk and into the back of the net, taking the Austrian’s goal tally for the season into double figures.

Billy Mitchell had Millwall’s first effort after 15 minutes, firing well over Max O’Leary’s goal from distance.

Tomas Kalas progressed forward before slotting a lovely ball through to Antoine Semenyo, but City’s number 18 saw his shot smothered by Bialkowski.

Millwall found an equaliser shortly after the twenty minutes mark as Murray Wallace’s cross from the left was headed home by Tom Bradshaw.

Shortly after, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Ryley Towler brought down Benik Afobe in the area. The former City forward stepped up and slotted his spot kick into the bottom corner.

Ayman Benarous has a half chance to pick out a leveller before the break but his shot flew over the bar to see head into the changing rooms 2-1 down.

Chris Martin and Han-Noah Massengo were both introduced at the break by Nigel Pearson in place of Ryley Towler and Ayman Benarous.

Early on in the second period Weimann was denied twice in quick succession by Bialkowski after Semenyo had skipped past two and delivered well from the right,

Martin then saw his shot blocked by Hutchinson as City came flying out the blocks to start the second period.

Massengo forced Bialkowski into a save down to his right with an effort from distance, before Weimann bagged the equaliser.

The Austrian got his second of the game to bring the Robins level as he burst past his marker to turn Massengo’s whipped cross into the top corner.

With minutes remaining on the clock Weimann completed his hat-trick to raise the roof at Ashton Gate. The ball ricocheted around the box and Alex Scott was denied by a block on the line but Weimann was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net.
