📝 Report: Bristol City 3-2 Cardiff City

City came from behind to clinch all three points against Cardiff City in the Severnside Derby at Ashton Gate thanks to a Chris Martin double and an eventual Andi Weimann winner.

Martin was on fire as he returned to the starting line, scoring in the 34th and 64th minutes as City levelled and took the lead before Weimann's 13th goal of the season.

That completed the double after Cardiff took the lead through James Collins and then scored late on through Max Watters.

BACKGROUND

Manager Nigel Pearson made two changes to the side beaten at Craven Cottage last week, with Martin and Rob Atkinson replacing Jay Dasilva and Zak Vyner, while Joe Williams returned from injury to make the bench.

WHAT HAPPENED

City created some early chances when Alex Scott’s dangerous free-kick just evaded Antoine Semenyo after a fairly even opening ten minutes.

Aden Flint headed back across goal for James Collins, but his effort was held comfortably by Max O’Leary.

The Robins were forced into an early change, when Atkinson was replaced by Vyner after suffering a calf injury.

Marlon Pack’s long throw was headed onto the post by Mark McGuinness, before City scrambled it away.

Scott’s left-footed delivery had just too much on it for Callum O’Dowda, who could only divert it behind for a Cardiff goal-kick.

City had to make a second first-half change when Andy King pulled up and Dasilva entered the field of play.

And it was the visitors who took the lead when Collins glanced home from Tommy Doyle’s cross.

City replied almost instantly, as Martin curled a superb equaliser past Alex Smithies after Weimann had spun in behind Flint.

O'Dowda's lofted ball was headed back across goal by Martin, but Flint was there to clear off the line for Cardiff.

HALF-TIME

Semenyo’s excellent first touch set him up to strike with his left, but his fierce effort was held by Smithies.

City took the lead just after the hour mark when Martin played a neat one-two with Semenyo, before hammering his shot into the bottom corner.

Pring drove forward with the ball and slotted in Semenyo, but his shot hit the side netting.

Weimann further extended City’s lead, latching on to Semenyo’s pass and firing past Smithies.

Scott played a short corner to O’Dowda, who skipped past Cody Drameh but his cross was too high for anyone in a red shirt to latch onto.

Cardiff got a goal back with seconds of normal time remaining when Max Watters headed Ryan Wintle’s delivery into the back of the net.

Semenyo almost put the game to bed on the counter, using his strength to shrug off Nelson, before seeing his left-footed shot cannon off the post.
