📝 Report: Bristol City 2-3 Sunderland AFC

The Robins tasted defeat in their first home outing of the 2022/23 season as Sunderland came from behind to claim victory at Ashton Gate.

Two goals from Ellis Simms and a header from Ross Stewart cancelled out goals from Andi Weimann and Chris Martin to hand the visitors all three points.

🧐 BACKGROUND

Manager Nigel Pearson named an unchanged XI from the side that took the field on the opening weekend of the season against Hull City.

However, Matty James pulled up injured during the warm-up which meant Han-Noah Massengo came into the fold with George Tanner coming on to the bench.

✍️ WHAT HAPPENED?

City went behind in the first five minutes when Kal Naismith was dispossessed on the edge of the box, Ellis Simms picked up the loose ball and rifled home from 20-yards out.

The Robins looked to reply in an instance with Weimann breaking down the right, play was switched to Jay Dasilva and when the ball came back inside Joe Williams’ low shot was easily gathered by Anthony Paterson.

Then came Weimann’s equaliser, with Zak Vyner again providing the assist for the Austrian who worked space in the box and fired past the keeper.

City went on the hunt for a second as Alex Scott provided a perfect through ball to Dasilva but the wing-back pulled his shot across goal and wide of the target.

Scott again proved to be a nuisance driving at the Sunderland defence, laying the ball off to Chris Martin, whose shot was cleared off the line.

Just prior to the break, Naismith did well to get back and clear away a low cross before Sykes headed away a dangerous cross in added time to see out the first half.

⏱ HALF-TIME

With just over five minutes of the second half played the Robins took the lead. Williams started the move as he picked out Weimann on the right, he played a great ball into the box where Martin was on hand to tap it into the back of the net.

Minutes later the visitors equalised as Simms got his second of the afternoon, his powerful shot from inside the area found its way past Bentley and into the City net.

Soon after Simms was inches away from getting his hat-trick but Bentley shuffled across his line quickly to make an excellent save.

Ross Stewart handed the Black Cats the lead heading into the final 20 minutes as he converted Alex Pritchard’s cross into the box with his head in front of the travelling supporters.

City pushed forward for an equaliser as Dasilva found substitute Kane Wilson at the back post with a lofted ball from the left, however the full-back failed to convert.

Naismith came inches away from City's third when the ball fell to him outside the box and he tried his luck from distance, however his effort flew just wide of the mark.

Buoyed by the home crowd and with the clock ticking down the Robins made one last push to find an equaliser and almost found it through Martin.

After some excellent footwork to get himself in the box, Williams then fired the ball across the six-yard area to find Martin, however despite getting a foot to the ball the forward couldn't direct the cross on target.
