Report: Bristol Academy Women 0-2 Birmingham City Ladies

Vixens go down to a strong Birmingham side.

Birmingham started the better side – forcing debutant Bristol goalkeeper Hannah Reid into two good saves early on to keep the scores level – but the visitors took the lead in the 16th minute.

Coral-Jade Haines struck a right-footed shot into the corner of the net to beat the Bristol stopper and give the Blues the lead.

Birmingham nearly doubled their lead but for the offside flag, Charlie Wellings slotting the ball into the bottom corner only to see the flag raised in the 41st minute.

The second half action started with the Blues hitting the woodwork, as Aoife Mannion surged forward and slicing a shot onto the post.

Bristol eventually did force Birmingham onto the backfoot, but a cutting edge was lacking as the visitors soaked up the pressure.

And the game was put to bed when England’s Jo Potter struck a free-kick through a crowd of players which met the head of Mannion, who nodded home to give her side an unassailable lead.

Bristol midfielder Angharad James said: “I think we can take a lot of positives, especially from the second half. It’s that final third again we need to improve on that and hopefully we can put things right on Saturday.

“We are all focussed and looking forward to next week’s game with Birmingham, no one wants to be in a relegation battle at all.

“But I know everyone is up for it and we know we need to win and hopefully that’s what we are going to do, preparation has got to be right this week.

“In training we have got to be on point so hopefully we can build on this and take it into Saturday’s game.”
