Report: Bristol Academy 2-5 Notts County

Bristol Academy go down to Notts County despite a strong fight back from the Vixens.

Notts County led 3-0 at the interval but Bristol fought back before the visitors asserted themselves again to leave the Vixens – who parted company with boss Dave Edmondson earlier in the week – still looking for their first point of the campaign.

County made their breakthrough in the 14th minute when Aileen Whelan created enough space inside the box to fire home and they added a second when Rachel Williams got enough contact on Whelan’s cross to send the ball inside the far post.

And the Lady Pies were three up ten minutes before the break when Fern Whelan powerfully headed home her first goal for the club from England international Alex Greenwood’s free-kick.

Bristol pulled a goal back in the second half after Sophie Ingle took advantage of a defensive mix-up before they narrowed the margin further when Loren Dykes went on a strong run down the left and crossed for Nikki Watts to fire home.

County rallied though to add their fourth goal 13 minutes from time – Greenwood’s long ball evaded the Bristol defence and Williams was on hand to notch her second goal of the game.

And the outcome was sealed in stoppage time when Greenwood crashed home County’s fifth from the penalty spot.

The Vixens are left still searching for that first point of the campaign.
