Goals from Carlton Morris and Michal Helik ended City’s hopes of securing anything from a trip to Oakwell.
Morris scored in the 10th minute from a corner by Amine Bassi, who then provided another set-piece gift to Helik to head in after 21 minutes.
Manager Nigel Pearson made one change to the side that started against Blackburn Rovers with Han-Noah Massengo replacing Joe Williams as the Robins went in search of back-to back wins for the first time this season.
Barnsley opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes when Carlton Morris reacted quickest to Amine Bassi’s corner and poked the ball home.
Eleven minutes later Barnsley were two ahead when Michael Helik had a free header from another Bassi corner to glance the ball past Bentley.
City had few opportunities, the best falling to Weimann who slid in to connect with Antoine Semenyo’s cross but hit the ball wide into the stand.
The Robins had to withstand further Barnsley pressure with Cundy heading Claudio Gomes’ header over.
City had another opportunity before the end of the half when Sememyo released Weimann but his cross was easily saved by Brad Collins.
City, who lost Alex Scott to injury after 35 minutes - replaced by Joe Williams - suffered another blow when Williams himself left the field after 55 minutes.
Barnsley almost extended their lead when Quine wrigged free and shot wide from the edge of the box.
The Robins had chances themselves with Dasilva, switched to the right in a formation change had a shot saved by Collins, Semenyo’s follow-up was blocked and, from the resulting corner, Rob Atkinson headed over.
Chris Martin had two chances late on with a header from Dasilva's cross going over the crossbar before seeing another headed chance cleared off the line.
Bentley (C), Cundy, Klose, Atkinson, Dasilva, Weimann, James, Massengo, Scott (Williams 38, Wells 55), Semenyo (Conway 87), Martin.
Subs (not used): Wiles-Richards, Pring, Vyner, Bell.
