Preview: Bristol City v Cheltenham Town (Pre-season)

The 'Johnson Cup' returns in the (friendly) battle of the Robins.

Weston-super-Mare's Woodsrping Stadium will tonight (July 10th) host the pre-season encounter between Lee Johnson's City and his dad Gary Johnson's Cheltenham Town (7.30pm kick-off).

Lee is going in search of a hat-trick of 'Johnson Cup' wins over Gary, who also managed the club between 2005-2010.

Tonight may be about fitness and putting tactics into practice, but there may just be a bit of family pride at stake too.

Tonight could also see youngsters Joe Morrell, Jake Andrews, Freddie Hinds and Taylor Moore go up against the Sky Bet League Two outfit, who they represented in the 2017/18 season.

It's City's second game of pre-season, following the Community Match with Bitton AFC on Sunday. Matty Taylor, Jamie Paterson, new signing Hakeeb Adelakun and Rory Holden all found the target in a 4-0 win.

It presented fans with the chance to see fellow summer signings Jack Hunt, Adam Webster, Andreas Weimann and Marley Watkins in action, as well as watch the club's talented youngsters in their chance to shine.

And they'll be looking to repeat what City's players achieved a year ago, when goals from recently departed Gustav Egvall and Bobby Reid helped City to a 3-0 victory.

LAST TIME: JOHNSON JNR COMPLETES CUP DOUBLE

Gustav Engvall scored twice at Whaddon Road to ensure the 'Johnson Cup' would maintain pride of place on the City side of the family mantelpiece.

Goalless at the break, City were 2-0 up within seven minutes of the restart as Engvall rounded goalkeeper Jonathan Flatt to find the net before half-time substitute Bobby Reid finished off a flowing team move to continue his summer hot streak.

It was Reid’s eighth goal in six pre-season outings, but Engvall would be the star of the show as he tapped in after Flatt got fingertips to a Callum O’Dowda header.

Johnson Jnr handed starts to City young guns Ivan Lucic, Zak Vyner, Lloyd Kelly and Morrell, as well as Engvall, with the Swedish striker making his first start of pre-season alongside the club's record signing, Famara Diédhiou.

Will the City head coach get another win over his dad?
