🎥 Post-match reaction: Downing hails hard working squad

Keith Downing said City were put through a “good workout” in their first pre-season test against Celtic.

The Robins went toe-to-toe to earn a clean sheet in the first match to be played at the Robins High Performance Centre.

The Celts enjoyed large spells of possession but City’s defensive work was praised by Assistant Coach Downing, while the hosts could have snatched victory but for Andreas Weimann and Callum O’Dowda seeing efforts denied by the woodwork.

23 players were used including new signings Matty James, Andy King and Rob Atkinson, while Weimann and Chris Martin made their first competitive appearances for nearly nine and six months, respectively.

Speaking to Robins TV, Downing thanked Celtic for coming down for the occasion, to mark the official opening of the Robins High Performance Centre.

He said: “As Nigel (Pearson) has mentioned, this was a first chance to work with the boys against opposition we don’t know so it was a good workout for us.

“[We hit] two posts but Celtic gave us a real test in the first half, they’re ahead of schedule with a Champions League qualifier coming up and they’ve had an extra couple of weeks on us.

“It was a severe test in the first half, we had to defend for our lives at times, chase the ball but they worked really hard and it was a good workout for us.

“The players have worked on their defensive side this week, there was some good bits to come from that. Now we go to Loughborough and progress into week three.”
