Nigel Pearson reflected that 'poor decisions' contributed to City's 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
The manager told Robins TV: "We made loads of poor decisions in possession, where we didn't do what we planned to do. For some of our youngsters it was a bit of a steep learning curve.
"At 1-0 there is always going to be a chance and we at least had more promising situations and a couple of chances we should done better with maybe. But that's not to say I don't recognise that they had more than enough possession and chances to win more comfortably."
Nathan Baker was stretchered off with a head injury after 60 minutes and taken to hospital for observation before being discharged into the care of the City medical team later that evening and Pearson said: "It was a very committed challenge from Nathan. It's another situation where he has a head injury so we'll just have to see how he is."
Pearson went on to thank the 665 City fans who made the trip and wished them a safe journey home in the snowy conditions.
City are back at home against Derby County on Saturday, December 4th (3pm).
Chris Vui and Charles Piutau were in action in the opening round of the Pacific Nations Cup, with Tonga beaten by Fiji and Samoa edging out Australia A.
